Before World War II, the music industry referred to honky tonk music as "hillbilly" music. This music was popular from Texas to Oklahoma, and eventually moved to Nashville. This genre of music featured guitar, fiddle, string bass, Hawaiian steel guitar, and fiddle. Hillbilly vocals were rough and unrefined, and often featured themes of lost love and loneliness. Its popularity has risen significantly in recent years.
